KS2 Trip to Duxford 29th November 2023

Children had an amazing day, under glorious blue sky, at Duxford Imperial War museum to support their work on World War 2. They were delighted to see real aircraft taking off and landing close up. They also saw a variety of different planes and enjoying the opportunity to get hands on in a cockpit pretending to be a pilot!

Our very own Narnia!

English writing!  21st November 2023

Children have been learning to write a setting description like The Lion The Witch and The wardrobe.  We went to Ashbeach common and collected vocabulary from the Word Well  and acted out the part when Lucy came out of the back of the wardrobe into Narnia!

Autumn Term 2023 Science unit on Light

During the unit children looked at the dangers from the sun. We placed a coloured piece of paper on the window with a smaller square of paper in the middle and left it for two weeks in a sunny location. Children made predictions about what would happen!

When children took the small square of paper down, they were amazed at how much the pink colour had faded. One group said that when they were a T shirt or a hat or sunscreen, it acts a bit like the black square and protects their skin from sunburn and heat stroke.

Looking at the results of our experiment!

Looking at shadows!

Children had great fun making shadows. However, they needed to look closely with eyes of a scientist to notice the difference between the shadow caused by an opaque object/material and a translucent object/material

Happy New Year!

Koalas have had a wonderful couple of days back in school.  We have been thinking about the year ahead finding ways to be kind to each other.

We have also been finishing our Black History theme work by making some African inspired masks!.

National Number Day!

Koalas Children came dressed in lots of different numbers from platform 9 3/4 to tops with parallel  lines on! We started the day debating if it would be better to have 3/8ths or 2/4 of a bar of chocolate!  Children had a great time trying to work out what option would result in the most chocolate!

Fraction decisions!

We played some fun times table games

We went on a math's nature challenge in Ashbeach Common

Plants plants plants!

Koalas have kicked off the summer term planting sunflower seeds for our school competition and preparing our brand new vegetable beds. Now all we need is for some warmer weather!  While we are waiting, we have set up an experiment so that we can watch broad beans begin to germinate. Such an amazing process that normally happens under ground and out of sight!  PHOTOS TO FOLLOW

Newsletter for Koala Class Summer Term

It has been a delightful first 3 days back, all the children are on top form, I think they really needed the Easter break!

We kicked off this term learning all about plants in science. We will be growing potatoes and some other vegetables in our brand new vegetable patch! As well as nurturing our sunflowers. (It’s not too late to bring one in, if you haven’t done it yet)

We also looked at environmental science and the children learned about climate change. They have made some pledges to not waste resources. For example, turning lights off, recycling and not leaving a tap running for longer than needed.

We will also be composting our fresh food waste from our snacks and thinking about what we can do to help reduce our paper usage.

English. We are writing information texts. As well as really working on those basic writing skills. Please keep supporting your child to access spelling shed at home, this is proving very effective for those children that are engaging on a regular basis.

In the final week of this half term we have a theatre group coming in to school.

Maths.  For the first part of the term we will continue learning to use formal methods of multiplication and division, moving on to work with some larger numbers.  This will be followed by learning about fractions. We also will be marking National Numeracy day on 18th May 2022.  More on this in the main newsletter.

Geography. We will be learning about the amazing rainforests across the world and this will link really well with our English writing.

In the second half of the term, we will have our Dads in school morning and we will of course be celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee with a tea party. More details will follow.

Koala enjoyed a fine spring morning learning about multiplication in our wonderful Ashbeach Common

What a fantastic launch of our new spelling scheme!  Children enjoyed dressing like bees and learning how to log in and play the spelling games!

Spelling shed launch day

Happy New Year!

We have enjoyed being back in school, the children have been thinking about their hopes and wishes for 2022 and have really impressed with their lovely thoughts of being kind and taking care of the planet by recycling.

We are looking forward to learning about Romans this term and the exciting launch of our new spelling program!
We are looking at shape poetry and the children will be writing their own poems next week.
